All specimens submitted for testing or analysis to the Medical Laboratories are received by Specimen Management (Clinical Laboratory Building, 24 hours a day), the Department of Pathology (HEP Building, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm), or Surgical Pathology East (University Hospital, fresh tissue specimens only). Specimens received are given a unique identifying number that will accompany the specimen through all phases of testing or analysis and allow for tracking of the specimen though the laboratories. Processing of specimens, aliquoting as necessary and pre-analytical variables such as proper specimen type and quantity are assessed by this area.
