Health System Orientation (HSO)

Welcome to the University of Virginia Health System! As a new team member, you play a critical role in helping achieve the Health System’s mission and goals. You have made the right choice to become a part of our organization.

Health System Orientation (HSO) is your first step towards building a successful career. Depending on your role, HSO will take between 1 to 3 days to complete. When you have completed your HSO sessions, you will participate in a specific department based orientation.

HSO General Sessions

HSO is held every other Monday. View the schedule for 2018 orientation dates. View the 2019 orientation dates
Times:       8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Benefits and Parking & Transportation representatives present at 999 Grove St. from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
Location:  Education Resource Center - 1220 Lee St. , Charlottesville VA, 22908                                                  *Note: There will be a fair amount of walking involved between locations. Please bring appropriate footwear and weather gear.

Cancellation Policy: HSO follows the UVA Health System operating schedule. If non-designated employees are asked not to report to work, HSO will be rescheduled. You will be contacted about rescheduling. 

Day 1 Agenda

  • Welcome & Introduction to Orientation
  • Executive Welcome & Health System Overview
  • ASPIRE Values
  • Customer Service & Patient Experience
  • Orientation Schedule & New Hire Tasks
  • Welcome Lunch with Manager or Department Team Member
  • Choose Your Own Experience (Technology, Benefits, Parking, Employee Health, etc.)

Days 2 & 3 - Orientation to Patient Care (OPC)

(For employees with direct patient care responsibilities)

Each component of OPC is designed for specific work groups. Attendance and participation in the various components depend on your role. Once you complete your required OPC components, please report to your department/unit managers to begin department orientation.

Nursing Clinical Orientation

RN's (except Clinician 1s and Travelers) are required to attend Nursing Clinical Onboarding, 3-7 weeks after the first week of hire.  Attendance dates will be distributed on Day 2 of OPC.
