Medical Director, Adult Asthma Program

Drew Harris, MD, has a clinical interest in severe asthma. Dr. Harris works with Larry Borish, MD, in the Pulmonary Allergy Collaborative Clinic or "PACC." At this clinic, we care for patients with severe asthma and other eosinophilic or allergic lung diseases such as Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA) and Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA). Advanced asthma therapies such as biological medications and bronchial thermoplasty are treatment options often discussed with our patients.  

Dr. Harris is also passionate about caring for vulnerable and rural populations. He serves as the medical director of the Black Lung Program at Stone Mountain Health Services, a federally qualified health center in central Appalachia. At Stone Mountain, he provides telemedicine consultation, medical-legal consultation, in addition to overseeing a pulmonary rehabilitation program, pulmonary function laboratory, and a smoking cessation program. Other examples of Dr. Harris' engagement in Appalachia includes his work as medical director of the UVA Wise student and faculty clinic, as well as the development of Appalachian Project ECHO: Pulmonary Health, which is a partnership between the UVA Division of Pulmonary Medicine, the UVA Karen S. Rheuban Center for Telehealth, Stone Mountain Health Services and the Health Wagon.

Dr. Harris is also an associate program director in the UVA internal medicine residency program, where he directs the "Community-Partnered Medicine" program. This program focuses on giving trainees the practical skills needed to partner with local community-based organizations to address the social, environmental, economic, and behavioral determinants of health in vulnerable populations. Partners for this program include the Charlottesville Free Clinic, federally qualified health centers throughout Virginia, The Legal Aid Justice Center, The Haven (a homeless day shelter), Habitat for Humanity, and others. 

Dr. Harris completed his undergraduate work, while playing rugby at Emory University. He completed medical school at the University of Pittsburgh and returned to Emory University for his internal medicine residency & chief residency. Afterwards, he served for two years in the Indian Health Service at Tuba City Regional Hospital in Arizona. Then completed his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Yale University in 2017. Immediately afterwards, Dr. Harris has been with UVA.  

He loves UVA basketball, mountain biking, playing sports with his two boys, and hiking with his wife.
