At UVA Health System, nurses aren’t just the backbone of our clinical teams or the frontline of care. They are clinical leaders driven to always do more for their patients — whether by delivering expert care, participating in root cause problem solving, driving innovation through research or preparing the next generation of nurses to thrive in the dynamic setting of an academic medical center.

You, the nurses of UVA, are the reasons why we do all we can to support your education, professional development, research interests, growth and engagement. Nursing retention and recruitment are ongoing top-priority goals of the UVA Health System and PNSO. Areas of specific focus to promote a healthy and productive work environment for nurses include:

  • supporting professional development
  • reducing turnover
  • exploring scheduling and compensation options
  • evaluating new technology and systems efficiencies

Our annual Nursing Satisfaction Survey and organization-wide Employee Engagement Survey each provide benchmarked feedback to inform our ongoing efforts.


Our nurses are our best recruiters of nurses! The PNSO partners with our Human Resources nurse recruiters to invite nurses to join the Health System team. Direct care nurses and nurse recruiters collaborate to recruit nursing professionals — from new graduate nurses to experienced nurses — through local events and open houses, shadowing experiences as well as through nationwide recruitment events. They are active participants in recruiting nursing students and interested nurse candidates.

HR Policy 901, Employee Referral Incentive Program, rewards nurses and Health System team members who identify and refer potential applicants for employment. The referral incentive is awarded for applicants who are hired into regular full-time or flex positions.


UVA Health System encourages nurses to learn and grow in their careers. No matter your passion, there are many opportunities to develop as a frontline clinician. Our Professional Practice Model, developed by frontline nurses, drives who we are as professional nurses providing the highest quality, expert care to our patients and symbolizes our care delivery system, Relationship-Based Care.  

Retaining UVA nurses is essential to the success of our organization and our efforts to deliver upon the essential elements of our mission; patient care, research and education. Each team member plays an important role in retaining our nursing colleagues. Together, we shape our work environment and professional experiences.

To support this organizational priority, Chief Nursing Officer, Mary Dixon, sponsors an innovative program to enhance nursing retention at UVA (log-in required). This program is led by a Nursing Retention Program Coordinator and a Data Analyst who are passionate about this mission. In collaboration with UVA nurses, a variety of strategies are implemented to impact nursing retention using evidence-based practice and innovative ideas from frontline clinicians.
