Clinical Practice Committee

Our point-of-care nurses observe changes that would help them care for patients better. We follow an evidence-based practice philosophy, and the autonomy of our shared governance model at UVA enables us to make changes to improve nursing practice across all areas.

  •  Tools for Planning Practice Changes: In planning and implementing practice changes, please follow this step-by-step evidence-based practice toolkit, and use this template as a worksheet for researching evidence and coordinating education, implementation and metrics for the change (see an example of the completed template here).
  • Keep up with the latest evidence! To get started, consider working with Dan Wilson, our nursing liaison in the Health System Library. Through the Library, we also have an online journal club that makes it easy to assess & share the latest literature.
  • Use Shared Governance to address clinical issues and suggestions at the Local Committee level; share findings with your Regional Committee; and raise issues with broad impact to the PNSO's central Clinical Practice Committee, (2018 chair Shelly Legg).
  • Stay updated on key changes in UVA nursing clinical practice through our monthly PNSO  Practice News newsletter.
  • Share your research projects & EBP solutions at the annual PNSO Evidence-Based Practice Symposium!

About the Central Clinical Practice Committee

The PNSO Bylaws describes Clinical Practice as one of the core missions of the PNSO, and convenes a standing Central committee of the PNSO to address this mission on an ongoing basis.

The Central Clinical Practice Committee is comprised of the Chairs of Regional Nursing committees to focus on improving nursing practice, patient care and documentation. Each of these representatives stays in close contact with both the Nursing Cabinet and practice areas' Regional and Local Committees, assuring communication and shared decision-making on proposed improvements in patient care affecting nursing.

The Clinical Practice Committee also works closely with liaisons to interdisciplinary practice committees.  The Chair represents Nursing on the hospital-wide Patient Care Committee, as well as other interprofessional decision-making groups.

The Vice-Chair coordinates a monthly nursing  Practice News educational module about recent and upcoming changes, and all nurses are pre-enrolled in the CBL. Many interprofessional colleagues have requested to be included on these monthly notifications, and the CBL is available for self-enrollment to them through our LMS.

Thanks for Visiting!

Welcome to the Professional Nursing Staff Organization! All Registered Nurses employed by the UVA Health System's Medical Center, School of Nursing and School of Medicine are members of our Professional Nursing Staff Organization (PNSO). Please provide us feedback!
