Continuing Education

It has been our privilege to provide you with free continuing education courses for the last thirty years.  Over the past ten years, there has been a steady decline in the need for monthly continuing education resulting in fewer participants.  As many of you know, there are changes in EMS education that allow for more flexibility and options in acquiring continuing education hours (see information below).  In addition, there are more agencies that are taking the lead in providing continuing education that is more specialized to the agency and provider. Our department is also changing to meet the evolving needs of the hospital, community and our patients.  Therefore, we have decided to discontinue the current, regularly scheduled continuing education classes at individual agencies

We will continue to email agency leadership on opportunities for education and outreach and conduct initial certification courses.  We also hope to continue outreach and education, utilizing different service lines and specialties within the UVA Medical Center, in order to actively participate with agencies and providers and support the continuum of care.  If you are interesting in having someone from UVA speak at your agency, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I would encourage all agencies to continue offering regularly scheduled continuing education.  Bringing both BLS and ALS providers together is important in order to provide an understanding of each other’s roles in patient care.  There are several ways to achieve this by either offering monthly or quarterly CE that is open and advertised to your own agency, as well as publically promoting other providers to attend.  Engage your medical directors to guide you on topics of importance from their perspective, as well as reaching out to subject matter experts in areas that may be important to your regional response (i.e. law enforcement, hospice, Region X or different hospital representatives).  The Regional Councils are also a resource for you to help organize continuing education.
