Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialists are here to support your program planning and attendance needs! Our team includes 11 master’s degree or higher prepared NPD Specialists; many of whom are certified in nursing professional development.  We have two administrative specialists who support the team.

Susan J. Galloway, PhD, RN

Bio: Bio: From Chicago, IL.   Received MSN in Nursing Education from DePaul University and Doctor of Philosophy from Uniformed Services University School of Nursing.   Research work and interests in areas of neuroscience, PTSD and education.    Served 25 years in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps living in a number of places including Rota, Spain.  Assignments and experiences have included Training Officer on the USNS Hospital Ship Comfort, Training Officer for NASA Space Shuttle Support Team – Europe, Chief of Hospital Professional Education for the Joint Task Force National Capital Region.  Husband is physics teacher and amateur rocket enthusiast.  We have 3 adult children and have 3 dogs and 4 chickens on our 15 acre homestead in Greenwood, VA.

Bio: Diploma Nurse from Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing, Bachelor’s Degree from Chamberlain College of Nursing, Masters in Nursing Education from Walden University, Nursing experience includes over 20 years in adult critical care, 2 years intermediate care, 12 years in ambulatory interventional cardiology practice and 1 year in acute medical/surgical unit.  Certified by ANCC as Nursing Professional Development Specialist (RN-BC); AACN as Adult Acute/Critical Care Knowledge Professional (CCRN-K); and ARDMS as Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)

Bio: BSN & MSN degrees and FNP certificate from the University of Virginia.  Twenty years of experience as an educator and currently is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia School of Nursing.  Recognized as a simulation expert nationally and internationally, International presenter on the use of simulation in healthcare.

Professional memberships: Founder and President for the Virginia State Simulation Alliance (VASSA), Inc., a founding board member of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and a National League for Nursing Academy of Nurse Educators Fellow.

Mary Knisley

Bio:  Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lynchburg College, Virginia, 11 years of acute care medical/surgical experience with an emphasis in oncology nursing, 9 years of nursing education experience.  MSN from Walden University, Maryland. Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Liberty University, Virginia. Adjunct Faculty at Liberty University in both the DNP and RN-BSN programs.

Richard A. Ridge, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, CENP

Bio:  Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1981); MBA from University of Massachusetts, Boston (1990). PhD in Nursing from the University of Virginia, 2001. Dissertation- Relationship of Nurse Staffing and Patient Satisfaction.  Former U.S. Navy submarine sailor and Hospital Corpsman.  Clinical nurse experience in acute spinal cord injury, psychiatry medical and surgical acute care, adult rehabilitation, and geriatrics.  Nursing leadership experience in operations and nursing professional development at the hospital and system levels. Experienced advocate and lobbyist for nursing as the CEO of the New Jersey State Nurses’ Association.  Previously served as the Director of Nursing Innovation and Outcomes for Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas.  Certified in Nursing Executive Practice, Advanced through the ANCC (NEA-BC) and the American Organization of Nurse Executives (CENP).

Research interests relate to the impact of organizational factors on clinical practice and outcomes.   

Personal Facts: Enjoy my role as grandpa to 4 grandchildren.  Enjoy participation with my wife in cultural events in Charlottesville, hiking, fly-fishing, local food and diverse cuisine offerings, and enjoy listening to blues, acoustic, old-time gospel, and country music, and U.S, military, and nursing history.

Miriam (Mimi) Tornrose, MN, RN-BC

Clinical experience area: acute care med/surg and solid organ transplant. 10 years experience as Nurse Educator (CNS) in California; 5 years as Clinical Faculty at UVA School of Nursing; 3 years as Staff Development Coordinator for acute rehab facility.
