Ordering an MRI

Orders entered into the University of Virginia's Epic EMR are available for UVA Imaging.

UVA Imaging also accepts orders on any legal order form; however, please do not fax orders written on a prescription pad as faxing will raise the void watermark invalidating the order.

UVA Imaging performs MRIs on patients who do not need conscious sedation and do not have a known contrast dye allergy

MRI Ordering Guide

UVA Imaging provides an MRI Anatomical Ordering Guide (PDF) to provide you with detailed information regarding specific MRI exams.

Scheduling & Locations

MRIs are performed Monday-Friday at the following locations.  Appointments are also available Saturdays and Sundays at select locations.

Follow Up Appointments

Please allow two hours between an MRI exam and a follow-up clinic appointment.

NPO Status

Abdomen or Pelvic MRI:  Patients may drink, but should not eat four hours before the exam.

Special Considerations for Medical Implants

Patients with the following implants may not be able to be scheduled for an MRI.  A proper investigation of the implant will need to be performed by the MRI staff prior to scheduling the patient's appointment. You may wish to consider if a CT is appropriate for the patient.

  • Pacemakers
  • Defibrillators
  • Implanted insulin pumps
  • Aneurysm clips

Exams with Contrast

GFR test must be performed on all patients who are diabetic and/or 60 years of age or older if current labs (within 30 days) are not available.

GFR test will be performed at the UVA Imaging center using the I-Stat machine.

No additional prep or time is required.

Patient Attire

All patients will be asked to change into a gown and scrubs pants for the exam. They should not wear eye make-up.
