Ultrasound Preparation

Clothing

Wear light comfortable clothing that will make it easy to access the body part being examined.

Medication              

You may continue to take any routine medications prescribed by your physician.

Diet

In order to obtain the highest quality images, please carefully follow dietary instructions provided.

Abdominal Studies

  • Abdomen: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam. [Liver, Liver Doppler, HerniaGall Bladder, Spleen, Aorta, Right or Left Upper Quadrant]
  • Renal Artery Stenosis: Nothing to eat or drink 12 hours prior to the exam.  You should also take 2 Gas-X tablets with 16 ounces of water the night before, and 1 Gas-X tablet with 16 ounces of water the morning of the exam.
  • Renal: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam.  You should drink 16 ounces of water 1 hour before the exam without urinating.
  • Renal Transplants: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam.  You should drink 16 ounces of water 1 hour before the exam without urinating.
  • Bladder: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam.  You should drink 16 ounces of water 1 hour before the exam without urinating.

Pelvic Studies

  • Transabdominal & Transvaginal: You must finish 32 ounces of liquid 1 hour before the exam and not urinate.

Obstetric Studies

  • 1st and 2nd trimester:  You must finish 32 ounces of liquid 1 hour before the exam and not urinate.
  • 3rd trimester-over 30 weeks: No prep required but you should not urinate within one hour before the exam.

Ultrasound appointments are available Monday-Friday at the following locations.

Results

The doctor who ordered your exam will provide your results.

If there is a critical finding on your study, your doctor will be notified by our Radiologists. 

If you have not heard from your provider within a reasonable time, please call their office directly.
