A Patient's Guide to CT (Printable)

Confirmation Call

A UVA Imaging Patient Liaison will contact you to provide preparation instructions for your exam, including any liquid or food restrictions.

If you have questions about your exam preparation, please call (434) 982-6600 Monday-Friday.

To ensure your safety, you will be asked to complete a Patient Screening Form at the time of registration or to bring the completed form with you to your appointment.

Please wear lightweight and comfortable clothing.  You may be asked to change into a gown.  A locker will be provided to store your belongings during your exam.

You may continue to take any routine medications prescribed by your physician.

If you are diabetic and taking Metformin, you will need to stop using Metformin after your exam.  Please consult with your Physician about follow-up blood tests and instructions on resuming Metformin.

Food & Liquids

You may have restrictions on eating prior to your exam (see list of exams) but please continue to drink plenty of clear liquids.   It is very important that you stay well hydrated prior to having your CT exam.

Clear liquids are water, any sodas, including colas, coffee or tea without dairy added (non-dairy creamer is fine) and apple juice.  Please do not drink citrus, tomato juices or milk.

If you have a known allergy to a contrast dye agent, please contact us right away.  Patients with a known contrast allergy can have their exams performed at the UVA Medical Center.

Questions about your exam?  Call (434) 982-6600 or toll free at (855) 875-7764 Mon-Fri 8am-5pm.

If there is a critical finding on your study,  your doctor will be notified by our Radiologists.
