Prostate MRI - What to Expect

What is a Prostate MRI?

A Prostate MRI allows the radiology doctors (radiologists) to closely examine the prostate gland.

MRI is a safe exam that does not expose you to radiation.

Prostate MRI is beneficial for detection, staging, and surveillance of prostate cancer.

Prostate MRI's are performed at the Fontaine Medical Park Building 415Building 545, and Northridge Medical Park on an industry-leading 3-Tesla Large Bore MRI scanner.

Learn how to prepare for your prostate MRI.

Prior to the MRI

  • You will be asked to fill out paperwork.
  • You will be asked to change into a hospital gown.
  • The technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.
  • You will be asked to empty your bladder.
  • If you are not diabetic, you will receive an injection of Medication used to slow down the movement in your bowels.

  • You will be asked to lie on your back on the table.  A cushion will be placed under your knees for comfort.
  • A frame (as seen to the right) will be placed on top of your pelvis prior to entering the MRI.
  • There is no endo-rectal coil used for Prostate MRI's at UVA Imaging.
  • You will enter the MRI head first.

Your technologist can see you and communicate with you at all times during your MRI.  During the exam, the technologist will provide updates to you through the intercom.

The machine makes loud thumping noises as it produces the images.  The video below allows you to the hear MRI sound.

You will be offered music and given hearing protection to reduce the noise during your exam.

Images will be reviewed and interpreted by UVA's Abdominal Radiologists who specialize in prostate imaging.
