New Graduate / Mentored Registered Nurse Program

Letter from Pam Cipriano

Pamela F. Cipriano, PhD, RN, FAAN
Chief Clinical Officer/Chief Nursing Officer

Dear Student Nurse,

The University of Virginia Health System is committed to developing and encouraging the professionalism of its nursing staff. We know, and research demonstrates, that your first work experience sets the tone for your professional career. We also acknowledge that it takes about two years for a new practitioner to feel comfortable in her or his new professional role. We are dedicated to making those first two years productive and enjoyable for you--our new nurse.

That is why we have developed the Mentorship Program for all Clinician 1 level nurses, a self-paced learning experience of up to six months. During that time, you will have a clinical preceptor who will provide a protected learning experience in a patient care area. You will have opportunities to observe the continuum of care through rotations within various care sites. Additional class time will be provided as well as opportunities to interact with students in the program. An experienced mentorship coordinator will guide your orientation to our professional practice model.

Upon hire as a full time nurse at UVA Health System, you will receive a $2000 bonus. After you complete your first year of employment and advance to a Clinician 2 you will receive a 5% increase in your salary. At 24 months, if you are working at least 36 hours/week, you will receive another $2000.

We look forward to having you join our healthcare team at the University of Virginia Medical Center. We are pleased you are considering beginning your professional career with us.
