Nutrition Support Blog: VASPEN Annual Meeting

It is autumn in Virginia which means that the humidity is gone and the Appalachian mountains will soon be draped in glorious hues, coyly tempting me each morning to evade work and come play in the Blue Ridge.  The arrival of fall also means that it is time for the Virginia Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (VASPEN) annual meeting.

I feel a special fondness for the various ASPEN chapters’ state and regional meetings.  Years ago, my clinical director encouraged me to attend the Mid-Atlantic ASPEN chapter meeting in Charlotte, NC. The energy and enthusiasm of the speakers at that MASPEN meeting played a pivotal role in changing my career trajectory from sports nutrition to a focus on nutrition support.

I have attended almost every VASPEN meeting since I moved to Virginia more than 20 years ago.  It has been wonderful getting to know so many great professionals from all over Virginia, West Virginia North Carolina and Maryland.  I always look forward to catching up with old friends, past co-workers and trainees, and meeting new peers. I have heard many great speakers, and come away from the conference each year with some new ideas and feeling inspired.  I have also had had the opportunity to present at VASPEN a number of times, and as I mentioned in an August blog, preparing a presentation is the best way to advance your expertise on a topic.  http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/pub/dietitian/inpatient/dh/nutrition-support-team-blog/nutrition-support-blog-contributing-to-the-field

This year’s VASPEN meeting is in Fairfax, on November 8th and 9th.  There are some excellent presentations scheduled.  You can find the link to the full program and registration information under “Upcoming Events” at the ASPEN website http://www.nutritioncare.org/ or download it directly here:  VASPEN Brochure 2013

The VASPEN board strives to make the conferences organized and educational, but also welcoming, social and fun.  I invite you to come to VASPEN, meet the experts and get your questions answered.  I won’t be presenting this year, but I will be there to introduce speakers, moderate some sessions and try not to interfere with the board members who know how to make these conferences run smoothly.  I look forward to meeting you there, and would love to hear your ideas for the 2014 VASPEN conference, future blog posts or answer any questions about our training programs.
