July Reading List

Here are some of the articles that the team will be reading this month:

First is an interesting article that reviews the findings and limitations of research with micronutrient supplementation in critically ill adult patients in addition to the reported meta-analysis.  The meta-analysis reported a statistically significant decrease in overall mortality and 28-d mortality but no difference in infectious complications, length of intensive care unit or hospital stay.  While a meta-analysis done with different micronutrients and different combinations of micronutrients in different doses and in different populations may not substantially add to current knowledge, we felt that the review and discussion sections were worth reading.

Visser J, Labadarios D, Blaauw R.  Micronutrient supplementation for critically ill adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.  Nutrition. 2011 Jul-Aug;27(7-8):745-58.

However, the big news is a high-impact article that just appeared in online version of The New England Journal of Medicine.  The investigators randomized a large number of patients to receive early (day 3) supplemental parenteral nutrition (PN) compared to late (day 8) parenteral nutrition for those patients not meeting enteral goals.  We hope to journal club this important article in the very near future and report in detail as part of our e-journal club.

Caesaer et al.  Early versus Late Parenteral Nutrition in Critically Ill Adults    (DOI: 10.1056/NEJMoa1102662)

Another interesting recent study appeared in Critical Care Medicine that investigated the effects of fish oil alone (no borage oil or antioxidants) in acute lung injury.  We will likely also journal club this article in the future so look for more details in our e-journal club.

Stapleton RD, Martin TR, Weiss NS, Crowley JJ, Gundel SJ, Nathens AB, Akhtar SR, Ruzinski JT, Caldwell E, Curtis JR, Heyland DK, Watkins TR, Parsons PE, Martin JM, Wurfel MM, Hallstrand TS, Sims KA, Neff MJ.   A phase II randomized placebo-controlled trial of omega-3 fatty acids for the treatment of acute lung injury.
