Outpatient Diabetes Nutrition

Purpose & Mission:  
To increase patient access to diabetes education in order to promote optimal health and prevent the high costs and complications of this disease.

Role of the Clinical Nutritionist:   
In partnership with university physicians, primary care physicians, and nurse practitioners, the nutritionist will evaluate the diabetes self care and nutritional needs of clients. Care is patient focused and individualized with goal setting acomplished based on patient needs and preferences. All nutritionists are experienced Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE), 

Services Provided:
Our program has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) since 2000 with recertification in 2006.  Our team of educators are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs), and our class cirriculum is structured around the ADA standards of care.  
Group classes provided include:

  • Basic Nutrition
  • Healthy Eating
  • Carbohydrate Counting, Introductory and Advanced
  • Weight Management

Individual coaching and medical nutrition therapy is available to persons with diabetes who need specialized carb counting and insulin adjustment, weight loss, lipid lowering, and kidney diets along with diabetes eating guidance.

MNT Provided & Outcomes: 
DEMP shows consistent reductions of hemoglobin A1c, blood cholesterol and other blood fats. Weight loss and reduction of medicines occurs for some of our patients.
Treatment addresses both type 1 & 2 diabetes as well as any of the following conditions when they co-occur with diabetes: cardiovascular disease, hypertension,  high cholesterol, triglycerides, low HDL; kidney disease, obesity, gastroparesis, osteoporosis, celiac disease/gluten enteropathy.
