UVA Health System Dietetic Internship

The University of Virginia Health System Dietetic Internship Program is a supervised practice program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education and Nutrition in Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics  and is administered by the Department of Nutrition Services. Applicants applying to our program must meet the minimum requirements for entry, which includes a bachelor's degree and completion of an ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). Upon completion of the dietetic internship program, graduates are provided a verification statement and are eligible to sit for the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN).

The internship program, which has an emphasis in nutrition support and pediatrics, provides dietetic interns with over 1200 hours of supervised practice experience in clinical, foodservice management, and community nutrition, as well as over 250 hours of didactic training in a variety of advanced topics including medical nutrition therapy, public health nutrition, and disease pathophysiology and nutrition management. Clinical and foodservice management on-the-job training is provided at the University of Virginia Health System and at other affiliated locations. The internship provides the individual intern with the resources necessary for education and training to qualify the intern for responsibilities as an "entry level" generalist dietitian, but with additional specialization in nutrition support and pediatrics.

The UVA Health System Dietetic Internship Program accepts 12 students per year beginning in early September. The program, which is 43 weeks in length, runs from the beginning of September (the day after Labor Day) until the last Friday in June or first Friday in July.

For more information on the program, please click on the Program Overview and other tabs in the column to the right. To see our current dietetic interns in action, check out the 'UVA Nutrition' Facebook page.

Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a master's degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Depending on the state, licensure or additional certification may be required to practice.

Currently, graduates who successfully complete the ACEND-accredited internship program at the University of Virginia Health System are eligible to take the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN.
